An Un-Cooperative Future

Often times… if you work hard, study hard, say all the right things, meet all the right people, are honest, find the right partners in crime, use the word love as often as possible, smile at all the right times, laugh at all the right jokes, take one for the team, take a few more for the team, sacrifice, give a little back, give a LOT back, donate to all the right charities, stand up for all the right causes, offer up a kind word once in awhile, send a thank you card, travel far and wide, visit as many foreign countries as possible, really SEE and appreciate different cultures, adapt, send flowers when appropriate (and it’s always appropriate), vote in every public election, cast your ballot with integrity, pay your bills on time, pay your taxes, pay your fair share, pay a little more for those that can not, pick up trash on the street, don’t smoke, don’t do drugs, read everything that you can get your hands on, obey traffic laws, don’t speed on the highway, pick up the tab sometimes, make your bed in the morning, bathe regularly, plan ahead, save for a rainy day, save for MANY rainy days, contribute to your company’s 401K plan, get to work on time, work through lunch sometimes, stay a little later to get the job done sometimes, respect your peers, respect your elders, respect the youthful opinions, respect different points of views, engage in debate, self reflect, question questionable authority, appreciate beauty, appreciate art in all its forms, have faith and be faithful, care for your community, contribute to your community, raise caring and loving children, love your life partner… and make sure they know it, participate in life, marvel at the universe, reach for the stars, aspire to greatness, aspire to INSPIRE others, lead from the front… but don’t forget those in the rear, learn to cook, be generally handy around the house, build something you never knew you could, know how to throw an awesome party, promote worthy advocates, champion equal rights, believe in human rights… but don’t forget that animals are also living creatures, kiss babies, hug strangers, embrace challenges, manage expectations, deal with adversity and setbacks, get knocked down a few times… then get back on your horse, present a firm handshake, know when to wear a jacket and tie, laugh with your friends and family, support your friends and family… and just, basically, try to be a civil and decent dude. If you do ALL of that… you still realize that some folks will always feel the need to tell you how you would be so much better off if you just “did things their way”, simply “speak the way they speak”, just “like what they like” — and absolutely “vote the way they vote”.

To say that I am politically “uncomfortable” these days would be a major understatement. Trying to explain this particular United States political climate to our smart, inquisitive and Brooklyn sharp kiddo… has proved fairly difficult for my wife and I to remain positive and stay “fair” while trying to present both sides of our internal arguments. BUT we are still trying, we are still living, still creating, still working, still building, still loving, still “never picking it up… and never putting it down”, still dreaming and still learning and still voting… in all of our free time. It’s an un-cooperative future, for sure, but could it be any other way for this self-proclaimed depressed intellectual? (wink) Not really — and there’s no way I would want to change any of it… because THIS life… at this particular moment in time… I think I’ve got it by the tail! So far. (no jinxies!)
